Why US is not happy over India’s Import restrictions ?
The United States has reportedly expressed concerns to India regarding its import regulations for certain information and communications technology (ICT) products, including laptops and tablets. This comes as India has implemented restrictions on the inbound shipments of such products.
The move indicates tensions between the two countries over trade policies in the ICT sector. These restrictions may involve tariffs, quotas, or other regulatory measures aimed at controlling the influx of imported goods into the Indian market.
There are currently no restrictions on imports of laptops, tablets and PCs. However, the government monitors imports through a registration system implemented in November 2023. This system allows them to collect data on incoming tech products. Based on this data, they might decide to introduce further regulations in the future.
The USA's National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers 2024 also said American exporters have raised concerns over the lack of prior stakeholder consultations on the issues. The United States continues to monitor implementation and to raise concerns with India (on this).
The report alleged that the "opaque and unpredictable" nature of India's application of quantitative restrictions has affected the ability of US exporters to access the market.
The US raising the issue at the WTO and through the TPF shows their dissatisfaction with the current limitations on US dairy exports to India. The US putting pressure through international organizations and bilateral channels indicates they want India to loosen restrictions and allow fairer market access for US dairy products.
At the same time, the ongoing discussions between the United States and India concerning intellectual property rights (IPR) challenges faced by American companies operating in India. Both countries are reportedly engaged in efforts to enhance intellectual property protection and enforcement within India. This indicates a shared interest in promoting innovation and safeguarding the rights of intellectual property holders.
Overall, the US government aims to promote open markets and fair trade practices globally, and when it perceives import restrictions as impeding these goals, it may raise concerns with the countries involved, including India.
