Elon Musk's artificial-intelligence startup could get a major boost as xAI races to catch rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic in the highly competitive space, expected to take a new approach to making the technology safe and "to understand reality". Now Musk’s xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe.

xAI was founded by Musk in Nevada on March 9, 2023 and has since been headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area in California. Igor Babuschkin, formerly associated with Google's DeepMind unit, was recruited by Musk to be Chief Engineer.

In November, xAI launched its own chatbot named Grok and released an updated version last month. An AI chatbot that is integrated with X. xAI has indicated that the bot will only be available to X's Premium+ subscribers when it is out of beta.

Musk officially announced the formation of xAI on July 12, 2023.He linked the date (7 + 12 + 23 = 42) to the book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, in which a supercomputer calculates that the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything is 42.

As AI becomes more advanced, humans are challenged to comprehend and retrace how the algorithm came to a result. The whole calculation process is turned into what is commonly referred to as a “black box" that is impossible to interpret. One of its immediate objectives is to create an AI that is capable of advanced mathematical reasoning, something not found in current models.

Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) is a set of processes and methods that allows human users to comprehend and trust the results and output created by machine learning algorithms.

Experts says, Explainable AI is crucial for an organization in building trust and confidence when putting AI models into production. AI explainability also helps an organization adopt a responsible approach to AI development.

There are reports that investors are in talks to inject $3 billion into Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xAI. This investment would value the company at a whopping $18 billion.

Going forward, with explainable AI – as well as interpretable machine learning – organizations can gain access to AI technology’s underlying decision-making and are empowered to make adjustments. Explainable AI can improve the user experience of a product or service by helping the end user trust that the AI is making good decisions.
