Samsung to recall 1 million Galaxy Note7 smartphones
Samsung has announced a voluntary recall of one million Galaxy Note7 devices in cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Samsung has received 92 reports of the batteries overheating in the US, including 26 reports of burns and 55 reports of property damage, including fires in cars and a garage. Samsung plans to recall one million Samsung Galaxy Note7 smartphones in the US market due to serious fire and burn hazards.
"The affected devices were sold in the US before September 15, 2016 and can overheat and pose a safety risk, it is extremely important to stop using Samsung Galaxy Note7 device, power it down and immediately exchange it using our US Note7 Exchange Program," says a statement released by Samsung.
The lithium-ion battery in the Galaxy Note7 smartphones can overheat and catch fire, posing a serious burn hazard to consumers. The recalled devices have a 5.7 inch screen and were sold in the following colors - black onyx, blue coral, gold platinum and silver titanium with a matching stylus. Samsung is printed on the top front of the phone and Samsung Galaxy Note7 is printed on the back of the phone.
One can contact the wireless carrier, retail outlet or Samsung.com where one purchased the device to receive free of charge a new Galaxy Note7 with a different battery, a refund or a new replacement device.
One can exchange current Samsung Note7 device with a new Galaxy Note7 as approved by the CPSC available no later than September 21, 2016; or exchange your current Samsung Note7 for a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge and replacement of any Note7 specific accessories with a refund of the price difference between devices; or contact your point of purchase to obtain a refund.
Customers who exchange a Note7 device will also receive a $25 gift card, in-store credit, in-store accessory credit or bill credit from select carrier retail outlets.
