PM Modi warns of AI’s ability to destroy 21st century
Inaugurating the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit, Prime Minister Modi spoke about the possible drawbacks of AI, specifically the deployment of deepfakes by terrorists. The PM emphasized India's contribution to AI by saying, "AI has the greatest potential to destroy the twenty-first century. India is totally dedicated to using AI in a morally and responsibly manner."
PM Modi further called for countries to work together on a global framework that will provide guardrails around AI and make its use more responsible.
"AI has the potential to destroy the 21st century," he claimed. The PM said that if AI tools fall into the hands of terrorists or cyber attackers then it could create havoc.
“If terrorist organisations get their hands on AI weapons, then it will be a threat to global security. There should be discussions and a conclusion should be arrived at on how wrong uses of AI can be stopped,” Modi said.
“There was an understanding that arrived at during G20, that in the same vein how the world has protocols on various subjects, there should be protocols for AI too,” the PM said.
“We should prepare a global framework on AI, for testing and deployment of high-risk, frontier AI tools. For that we need conviction, commitment, coordination and collaboration,” he added.
The PM also said that the government is going to launch an AI Mission that will concentrate on establishing AI computing in the country to help startups and innovators. This mission will also be focused on helping the education, agriculture and healthcare sectors, he added.
