OpenAI has signed a deal with Reddit for access to real-time content from its data API. This means it can surface discussions from the site within ChatGPT and other new products. The agreement is similar to the one Reddit signed with Google earlier this year that was reportedly worth $60 million.
The deal will also “enable Reddit to bring new AI-powered features to Redditors and mods” and use OpenAI’s large language models to build applications.
OpenAI has also committed to becoming a Reddit advertising partner.
Reddit users have previously expressed concerns over the platform's management and changes to its API pricing. The recent partnership between OpenAI and Stack Overflow also faced criticism with users attempting to delete their posts.
The deal was however lauded by Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, stating that incorporating Reddit in ChatGPT aligns with their belief in a connected internet and helps users find relevant content.
Reddit has however previously demonstrated hostility towards companies using its data to train AI models, even threatening to block Google web crawlers from accessing the site. OpenAI also allegedly informed the moderators of the subreddit r/ChatGPT of a copyright violation for using the ChatGPT logo as a display photo.
