We are witnessing a significant increase in opensource adoption in India both in enterprises and government segments, besides digital businesses. Opensource is an extremely important aspect of Digital India. It offers flexibility to enable, customize and explore newer technologies taking advantage of the global participation, un bound development, service automation which enables rapid development & deployment, bringing down the cost significantly. Open Source is now being used in various government projects under digital India program. The Indian Government also announced its Open source policy in 2015.
The major feature of Open source software besides lower infrastructure & software costs are is ability to scale, consolidation, freedom from vendor lock in, security, longterm viability, collaboration and speed to innovation. The platform offers developers an open and flexible environment to innovate in a scalable environment. It gives them architectural control unlike proprietary software. It enables enterprises and government to avoid vendor lock-in while leveraging their existing IT infrastructure and applications, which is imperative for building hybrid cloud.
The rise of digital transformation in India has pushed the adoption of Open Source both by enterprises and government. As per industry reports, by 2020 70% ofall newly deployed applications will run on an open source databases. The uptake of the adoption by companies of all sizes is a direct reflection of the maturity of the open source solutions. Infact, several institutes are opting to now including Open Source in their curriculum.
Open Source adoption is increasing in India with more government entities and organisations coming to the fore to take adoptive measures. However, a well-equipped talent pool and a proper training mechanism is needed to empower the developers with the expertise required to take advantage & contribute to the Open SOuce Software.
