LogMeIn Rescue Adds Two-Factor Authentication Powered by LastPass

Security is at the forefront of everything we do at LogMeIn. In fact, our products are architected with security being the most important design objective. Today, we’ve taken yet another step to ensure the security of LogMeIn Rescue customers by adding a new two-factor authentication feature.

For those that aren’t familiar, two factor authentication goes beyond the basic password to add another layer of security to the accounts we are committed to protecting. Two-factor authentication refers to something you know — which in this case will be your username and password — and something you have, which will be a generated code. The extra level of security comes in because users will need both of these factors to access the account. So even if a password was compromised, for example, the lack of additional login data would thwart any attacks.

So how are we doing this? At LogMeIn we believe in leveraging best-of-breed technologies to help meet our customers’ needs. Luckily for us, we have an industry-leading authenticator within our own product portfolio – the LastPass Authenticator. Not only is LastPass part of our family, but the one-of-a-kind functionality and ease of use, made it the perfect partner for this new feature.

The LastPass Authenticator is a multi-factor app that lives on your smartphone (the “something you have” I referenced above) and offers a unique one-tap password verification experience. Meaning that when accessing your account, a code will be sent to the app/associated phone with that account and with a quick tap off the “verify” key the user will have instant access. Additionally, LastPass offers time-based 6-digit generated passcodes and SMS codes for manual entry. The free app is available for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone and does not require a LastPass account for use.

This new feature – which was a direct result of industry trends and customer conversations – is another step in an already broad swath of security measures we’ve implemented to ensure confidence when using LogMeIn Rescue. We conduct annual security audits, have permission-required functionality, detailed reporting and auditing features, and banking-grade AES-256-bit encryption. And last year we received a SOC2 certification which affirms the high quality of our controls and processes.
