Greater vigilance was needed against evolving cyber threats, he said, as he called for regular cyber auditing of IT infrastructure of all organisations under the home ministry and issued directions for upgradation and updation of National Information Security Policy and Guidelines (NISPG) for the government sector. Singh also expressed concern over financial frauds being committed on gullible public by phone call fraudsters and stressed on increasing public awareness and strengthening of institutional framework for checking such frauds.
A recent survey on countries impacted on the cyber-attack says, list of top 10 targeted countries for phishing attacks, India rose from No. 10 in January-March last year to No. 3 this year. The situation could worsen in the coming days, as the Union Home Secretary , Rajiv Gauba warned at a recent event, that cybercrime is going to multiply. Hackers will attack government websites. Cybercrime will cost the world $6 trillion a year by 2021.
Cyber attacks are among key security challenges in India and more than half of these crimes can be traced to Jamtara, a small district town in the Santhal Pargana region of Jharkhand, Rajiv Gauba, Union home secretary said. The victims of Jamtara were spread across the country. "The NCRB data has not fully captured Jamtara's contribution (to cyber crime). These (criminals) are not highly educated individuals and mostly are youngsters.
