IBM now has bigger workforce in India than the US
It is official IBM has more employees in India than in the US. Over the last decade, the company shifted almost half of its business from around the world to India considering it as a major growth market. Presently, the company has around 130,000 people employed in India and that constitutes about one-third of its total workforce. “IBM India, in the truest sense, is a microcosm of the IBM company,” said Vanitha Narayanan, chairman,IBM- Indian operations as quoted on New York Times.
The numbers hold a lot of significance, setting an example of modern-day globalization. Also, it goes against what US President Donald Trump has been betting for in the country. President Trump has allegedly been pressing firms like Apple,Google and others to shift their business centers back in America, rather than outsourcing employment from other countries.
As per the NYT report, IBM in India has almost doubled the number of its employees since 2007. The company has carried out a number of layoffs at its US division and reportedly has around 100,000 employees at the American office. The company is said to have 130,000 in 2007 and the numbers have been cut down all these years and IBM India sets an example of modern-day globalization.
An increasing number of Indian employees can also be attributed to affordable or less expensive employment here in the country. As per the report, in terms of Innovation Indian talents are no way lesser and the salaries paid to employee in India is comparatively lower than the salaries paid to those based out of America. “I am looking for India to be my hub for affordable innovation,” Ms. Narayanan said.
The tech industry has been shifting jobs overseas for decades, and other big American companies like Oracle ,Cisco and Dell also employ a majority of their workers outside the United States.American technology companies have been expanding in India for years, drawn by the availability of low-cost, technically trained English-speaking talent. Indian government agencies and corporations have also become major buyers of hardware, software and services, spending about $38 billion last year.
IBM’s business portfolio ranges from providing computing support to global companies like AT&T and Shell to research in fields of artificial intelligence and computer vision for self-driving cars. At the recently concluded first-ever India Mobile Congress 2017,Huawei also declared its Bengaluru R&D units as the largest among its other global units.
