Hackers use Pirated Software to spread malware
Mac users beware! A new Trojan-Proxy malware is spreading via pirated software, posing a significant threat to your device and data. This malware has been injected into 35 popular image-editing, video compression, editing, data recovery, and network scanning applications.
Unauthorized websites distributing trojanized versions of cracked software have been found to infect Apple macOS users with a new Trojan-Proxy malware. Attackers can use this type of malware to gain money by building a proxy server network or to perform criminal acts on behalf of the victim, to launch attacks on websites, companies & individuals, buy guns, drugs, and other illicit goods.
Let’s understand how it works:
· Unauthorized websites distribute trojanized versions of cracked software.
· When you download and install this software, the malware is also installed on your device.
· The malware can then:
o Turn your device into a proxy server, which can be used for malicious activities such as launching attacks on websites and companies.
o Steal your personal information, such as passwords and credit card details.
o Install other malware on your device.
As per the research from Kaspersky, it found evidence indicating that the malware is a cross-platform threat, owing to artifacts unearthed for Windows and Android as well . The cracked software disguises itself as legitimate multimedia, image editing, data recovery, and productivity tools, specifically targeting users seeking pirated software.
The macOS variants propagate under the guise of legitimate multimedia, image editing, data recovery, and productivity tools. This suggests that users searching for pirated software are the targets of the campaign.
What you can do to stay safe:
· Only download software from trusted sources. Avoid using websites that distribute pirated software.
· Be careful what you click on. Do not click on links or attachments in emails or messages from unknown senders.
· Back up your data regularly. This will help you to recover your data if your device is infected with malware.
