Government Approves Rs 1261 Cr Drone Scheme Empowering Women Self-Help Groups to Assist Agriculture Sector
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given the nod to a Central Sector Scheme aimed at providing drones to Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs). The Rs. 1261 Crore initiative, slated for implementation from 2024-25 to 2025-26, focuses on enhancing agricultural practices by facilitating drone services through 15,000 selected Women SHGs.
Aligned with the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the scheme seeks to empower women SHGs by introducing drone technology into the agricultural sector. The primary objective is to offer rental drone services to farmers for agricultural purposes, thereby boosting efficiency and productivity.
Key Highlights of the Scheme:
Holistic Interventions: The scheme orchestrates comprehensive efforts by converging resources from the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Department of Rural Development, Department of Fertilizers, Women SHGs, and Lead Fertilizer Companies.
Cluster-Based Approach: Identifying economically feasible clusters for drone usage, the scheme will select 15,000 women SHGs across various states to provide drones.
Financial Assistance: Women SHGs will receive central financial assistance covering 80% of the drone's cost and ancillary charges, up to a maximum of Rs. Eight Lakh. The Cluster Level Federation (CLFs) of SHGs may secure the remaining amount as a loan under the National Agriculture Infra Financing Facility.
Training Initiatives: Members of SHGs will undergo a 15-day training program, including mandatory drone pilot training and additional sessions on nutrient and pesticide application for agriculture purposes. Another member or family member with expertise in repairs and maintenance will be trained as a drone technician/assistant.
LFCs as Facilitators: Lead Fertilizer Companies (LFCs) will bridge the gap between drone supplier companies and SHGs, facilitating the procurement, repair, and maintenance of drones.
Promotion of Nano Fertilizers: LFCs will promote the use of Nano Fertilizers such as Nano Urea and Nano DAP through drones, providing SHGs with additional revenue streams by renting out drone services to farmers for both Nano fertilizer and pesticide applications.
Sustainable Livelihoods: The scheme aims to provide sustainable business and livelihood support to 15,000 SHGs, enabling them to earn an additional income of at least Rs. One lakh per annum.
The initiative is anticipated to infuse advanced technology into agriculture, leading to improved efficiency, enhanced crop yields, and reduced operational costs for the benefit of farmers. The scheme reflects a significant stride towards empowering women in agriculture and integrating cutting-edge technology into traditional farming practices.
