Google to shut down whiteboard app Jamboard
Google has announced that it will be shutting down its Jamboard app and whiteboard devices in 2024. The Jamboard app will go into read-only mode on October 1, 2024, and will be permanently shut down on December 31, 2024.
The Jamboard hardware will no longer receive software updates on September 30, 2024, and its license subscriptions will expire the same day. The Jamboard app is currently accessible in Google Drive, and can be used without a Jamboard device.
Google has stated that it is making this decision to focus on third-party whiteboarding apps that offer more features and are preferred by Workspace customers.
The company has partnered with FigJam, Lucidspark, and Miro to bring digital whiteboarding to Workspace and will help users migrate their Jamboard files to the new apps. Google will also integrate these apps into Avocor's Series One Board 65 and Desk 27 devices in early 2024.
According to Google, it's heard from customers that these tools help their teams work better together, "specifically, the advanced features they offer such as infinite canvas, use case templates, voting, and more."
"Based on this feedback, we've decided to leverage our partner ecosystem for whiteboarding in Workspace and focus our efforts on core content collaboration across Docs, Sheets, and Slides," Google said in its announcement.
