Google Phone app eliminates the "Nearby Places" search feature
The "Nearby Places" search function, which let users locate nearby businesses and points of interest while on calls, has been eliminated from the Google Phone app. The app's design is supposed to be simplified with this elimination, however several users were disappointed. Google acknowledged the modification and said it is a result of continuing improvements. Users can still use other apps or Google Maps to view local search results.
Google has justified the removal of the Nearby Places feature by stating that it was used by "only a very small number of people."
The tech giant is now encouraging users to utilize Search or Maps to find phone numbers. This change will allow Google to concentrate on enhancing the quality, reliability, and innovation in phone calling experiences.
Google announced, “We’re sunsetting this feature so that our team can focus on building the highest quality, most reliable, and most innovative experiences in phone calling. For example, in 2023 we launched new Call Screen AI features, Hold For Me and Direct My Call support in additional countries, and Call Screen transcripts on your Pixel Watch. There’s a lot more planned for 2024, and our team will be working hard throughout the year to launch and improve even more ways to help your phone calling experience!”
