Evolution to Revolution by Google, bringing IoT closer to everyone
India is a proven market for the growth of digital dominance and social media companies are looking for the next frontier of growth. And nothing looks as good as India’s under-penetrated market-in terms of users, advertising, Internet access, anything at all. India makes perfect sense because it is the only major market in the world where the number of Internet users is growing rapidly. It is also the second largest country in the world in terms of Internet users, ahead of the US and behind China. Google as a pioneer in data acquisition, also offers a unique android platform for developing/customizing locally as per the need of the technology developers and the way you like it. Most importantly, Google wants to bring the Internet to life for everyone in India.
Google is already helping to foster and support India’s engineering talent. The Android Skilling program aims to bring universities and training partners to inspire and educate more than two million developers. With this the Developer community is getting a boost.
In the mobile first world, Google is working towards organizing the world’s information technology and making it universally accessible and useful In India. The more people have access to the tools, services, information and training found online, the more they can pursue their ambitions and reach their potential. Google has already equipped 110 railway stations with high – speed Internet and the network will expand quickly to cover 400 of the busiest stations in India before the end of 2017. Currently the number of monthly users accessing the Internet at railway stations is – 5,000,000 at 110 stations
Google products touching and making life easy....
Every day, smartphones are bringing more and more people online. And while India has 3G and 4G networks available, most people only have access to 2G services, which is neither fast nor data-friendly. So, to help give mobile users a faster, better experience no matter how fast their connection is – and to help them save precious data – Google is enhancing its popular products and experiences with new features.
For instance, Offline and online maps is a feature in Google Maps that gives people the ability to get turn-by-turn driving directions, search for specific destinations, and find useful information about places.
Empowering SMEs...
As small businesses across India chart their growth journey, technology will play a pivotal role in helping them explore new markets, engage different audiences and compete more effectively. Google supports on how their small ides will grow further into world-changing companies with right support. The focus is to enable them with the right skills and tools to help them digitize and leverage by using the power of Internet.
Under Google's Digital Unlocked initiative, businesses across India can access training, both online and offline, and a set of tools that can help them from conception to execution. The Number of businesses brought online by Google in December 2015 was 2,000,000 and in August 2016 is 8,000,000
Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)...
40% of people will abandon a website if it takes more than three seconds to load. So, Google partnered with publishers around the world in the AMP Project. Now, available to Indian publishers, it makes pages load in less than a second. And that’s not all. It also consumes 10 times less data.
Language not a barrier now...
Of the 350 million people in India who get online, 150 million accessed content in in Indian language. Everyone deserves to understand and enjoy the Internet in their own language, and Google is striving to give Indians access to it. Right now, less than 0.1% of websites are in a local language, making them irrelevant to the millions of Indians who cannot understand them. Google is to kick off a program to train more than 2,000 journalists on how to use digital tools and data for reporting, enabling them to create content in local language.
Training 2 million future mobile developers...
India is on its way to have the world’s largest developer base by 2018, but right now, less than 25% of these developers are building for mobile. Given that 65% of India’s current users access the Internet only on their mobile phone - a trend that is only going to increase – Google wants to invest in helping India become the global leader in mobile app development by 2018. Current number of enrollments in mobile courses has reached to 129,000.
Women and Internet...
Only 1 in 10 Internet users in rural India is a woman. Google is determined to bridge this gender gap by enabling women in villages to use the Internet for their own benefit and the benefit of their communities.
In partnership with Tata Trust, Google has launched Internet Saathi to equip women in villages across India with basic Internet skills and provide them with Internet– enabled devices. By January 2017, the number of women trained by the Internet Saathis has reached to 2,600,000.
Proof of concept...
Google has won a Rs.150 cr. contract for developing its first city Wi-Fi deal in collaboration with companies like IBM, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and RailTel from Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited (PSCSCL), a special purpose (SPV) vehicle formed for the smart city mission in the city.
Google is working to provide a better and more inclusive online experience for Indian users in three areas – in access to the internet; in platforms, which allow people and developers share through and build upon the Internet and in products, which provide better and more relevant Google experiences for Indians.
