What is your take on bringing state-of-the-art data centers to the country?
India is heading towards a data-driven economy and this economy is driven by data center offerings that we have in our country. To bring the state-of-the-art data centers in India we need to consider 2 major factors namely- power and bandwidth.
In the past, a major reason why global data center players didn’t tap into the Indian market can be attributed to the fact that power reliability along with high power cost was a big concern for them. However, the cost of power still remains to be on the higher side with the power reliability factor coming down. Talking about the bandwidth factor, bandwidth prices have come down to a great extent, though the reliability of bandwidth is still a concern. We need to have multiple reliable bandwidth providers along with a cost-efficient power source in India to flourish the data center business in India. Last-mile connectivity still remains to be a major concern in the country. There lies a big potential for the data center business to emerge in a country like India, where a huge portion of the user-critical and confidential data is residing outside the Indian territory. The Government has been working on data localization policies and forcing the global data players to bring back the data to India.
Though there might not be a significant impact on the horizontal expansion of data centers, however, we will witness a significant impact when it comes to vertical utilization of racks in data centers. The next 5-6 years are going to be very phenomenal for the data center industry in our country.
What is your perception about cloud driving innovation into various key growth verticals in the Industry?
Today, everything is hosted on the cloud. Earlier, people had a doubt about its potential and was perceived by many that cloud is meant only for the SMEs and startups. With time, there has been mass adoption of cloud among various verticals of the society. The majority of the government workloads have now moved on to the cloud. The best example of this would be the Maharashtra state government, whose 90% of the workload is now on the cloud and ESDS has a major chunk of it on its Government Community Cloud. Not only the state government, but even the central government ministries have also migrated their crucial projects to the cloud.
ESDS offers cloud to all the business verticals, be it government, enterprise, SMEs, defence, BFSI, etc. ESDS also has SaaS offerings and we can say that ESDS is amongst the top-5 cloud-based SaaS provider in India. iPAS (Integrated Planning and Administration System) along with VTMScan have been the most popular SaaS offerings of ESDS. Today, we touch the lives of 40% of India’s population with our cloud and SaaS offerings.
What are your priorities for the year 2020-21?
The priorities that I have set for ESDS as a CEO are to touch the lives of at least 60% of the Indian population in the next 12 months and 1B Indians over next 5 Years. ESDS has also been helping its customers in reducing their cost on infrastructure and managed services. With our uniquely patented cloud technology, eNlight 3600, we have significantly reduced the costs and successfully are able to lower down infrastructure expenditure by 80% of the Central Government and Maharashtra State Government along with 325+ banks. This all has resulted in huge savings supported by secured infrastructure and a risk-free environment for running their software, supports, customer portals, ERPs, etc. At the same time, it has led our business model also to grow.
How are ESDS data centers different from other data centers in the country?
When we talk about customer-centric workloads, be it either- B2C or G2C, all the customer initiatives are hosted on the cloud and there is no way where one can escape from it. There has been a shift from cloud to on-premise, but only of the Startups which have become big with time. Once an SME evolves into a complete enterprise, people start shifting their partial workloads to on-premise from cloud to save on the cost factor. This is because the people don’t find their cloud vendors and providers anymore a cost-efficient option. Enterprises consider data to be more secured when it is stored on-premise. ESDS offerings are not restricted only to the data centers. We even have offerings under SaaS, PaaS, IaaS. Our patented cloud technology- eNlight 3600is already deployed on the Edge and the key advantage that it gives to the Edge is you can run multiple VMs on eNlight 3600.
