Researchers have achieved a breakthrough in data storage technology by successfully storing multiple bits of information in individual defects within diamonds. This innovative approach utilizes the unique properties of "color centers," which are tiny flaws in the diamond's atomic structure, to encode and retrieve data using light.
A recent research says, Scientists were able to store multiple bits of data (0s and 1s) within a single diamond defect by encoding the information across different light frequencies. This technique, known as frequency-division multiplexing, allows for a more efficient use of space.
The research achieved a data density of 25 gigabytes (GB) per square inch, which is significantly higher than conventional storage technologies like hard disk drives and solid-state drives. The good part is the data can be Rewritable, it means, the data stored in the diamond defects can be erased and rewritten repeatedly, making the technology suitable for long-term data storage.
