DDoS attack through Smart toothbrushes
A recent cyberattack involved hackers compromising a large number of smart toothbrushes, estimated to be around 3 million, to launch a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack on a Swiss company. The story of a massive smart toothbrush botnet causing millions in damages is certainly dramatic.
The specific brand of toothbrush, the target company, and the exact nature of the attack remain unknown, making it difficult to assess the credibility of the claims. While large-scale DDoS attacks are possible, using millions of low-powered devices like toothbrushes is technically challenging and raises questions about efficiency compared to other methods.
Organizations are even more vulnerable to disruptions and downtime, which can result in revenue loss. DDoS attacks continue to be a threat to online channels – cyber attackers choose this method because they are fast and cheap to launch, don’t require a toehold in existing systems, and can cause massive disruption relative to the effort.
The compromised toothbrushes were running Java, a popular language for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Once infected, a global network of malicious toothbrushes supposedly launched their successful attack.
The repurposed toothbrushes supposedly accomplished this by flooding the Swiss website with bogus traffic, effectively knocking services offline and causing widespread disruption.
The compromised devices were used in a DDoS attack, overwhelming the target company's website with traffic and causing financial losses. This attack highlights the growing security concerns surrounding internet-connected devices, even seemingly innocuous ones like toothbrushes.
Consumers should be aware of the potential risks associated with using such devices and take steps to mitigate them. Regulatory bodies may need to consider stricter security standards for these devices in the future.
