Dad always believed himself to be the trustee of his wealth than owner says Rishad Premji
Wipro founder Azim Premji, is topping the list of the most generous individuals in the country as he donated Rs 22 crore a day, taking his total contribution to charity in the previous year to Rs 7,904 crore, according to Eledgive Hurun Philanthropy list 2020.
Rishad Premji, Azim Premji's elder son and the chairman of Wipro wrote in a twitter post that "My father has always believed that he was a trustee of his wealth and never it’s owner. Being part of the communities in which we live and work is also a core part of Wipro."
Azim Premji, who nurtured a company from vegetable oil maker to diversified conglomerate, is one of the richest men in India, has also shown his philanthropic side.
Till now he has donated nearly half of his wealth towards charity. His main charity work has been in the field of education.
Azim Premji was the first Indian to sign up for The Giving Pledge, a campaign led by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, to encourage the wealthiest people to make a commitment to give most of their wealth to philanthropic causes. He is the third non-American after Richard Branson and David Sainsbury to join this philanthropy club.
In May 2020, the Azim Premji Foundation collaborated with the National Centre for Biological Sciences and the Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine for augmenting testing infrastructure to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
