CtrlS Datacenters first to use Water-Based Cooling System

CtrlS Datacenters first to use Water-Based Cooling System

Our areas of expertise include custom-built IT Infrastructure and Services suitable for large corporations, Co-location Services, Managed Services, and Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity Planning Services.

CtrlS is headquartered in Hyderabad and is establishing Tier-IV data center space capable of hosting 20,000 racks across all the major cities in India. We help companies retain their competitive advantage at all times by giving them the peace of mind to focus on their core business.

Kindly share some of your recent initiatives.
CtrlS has always been at the forefront of innovations. We have implemented a lot of green measures in our data center. One of the recent ones is a unique water-based cooling system which cools the data center effectively without allowing water entering into the premises.

How will the water-based cooling system help you to reduce energy cost?
The water-based cooling system was implemented as a part our green initiatives rather than a solution to any problem. CtrlS is the first data center in the country to use water- based cooling system which does not allow the water to enter the data center at any point of time, making it completely safe. This new cooling system is part of our efforts to bring in energy efficiencies and save on costs which can be passed on to our customers. The water-cooled system will decrease the power consumption in our data center by 30 per cent. Moreover, this is a completely environment-friendly system and one of our biggest initiatives towards being a green data center.

What are the other important benefits of this technology?
It is important for corporates to be environmentally conscious as these issues have an urgency to be addressed. For example, the carbon emission worldwide is about 9,000 metric tons of carbon every year .If this continues, then the air we breathe will be toxic by 2050. Hence, it becomes all the more important for corporates to implement green measures and thereby reduce the carbon footprint.

Additionally, the financial implications of power savings can be passed on as a benefit to the end-customer.

Do you plan to expand this set-up?
We will be saving more than Rs.1.6 crore every year from the current pilot implementation at Hyderabad. Once this water-cooled system is implemented across all our data centers, the total savings would be more than Rs.20 crore every year. As a matter of fact, if all the data centers in India implement water-based cooling system in their data center, they can save more than Rs.1,400 crore by 2012.

How important is the Indian market for you?
Currently, we are completely focussed on the Indian market as it has huge business potential. As a matter of fact, the India data center market is growing at a CAGR of 30– 35 per cent. We are seeing strong demand from BFSI, Telecom, manufacturing and government organizations.

What are your other major plans for the year 2009?
We are planning to add Tier-IV data centers across all the major cities in India.

What is the growth you are targeting?
We have been experiencing phenomenal growth in our revenue and customers. We have added more than 100 customers in the last one year. Our aim is to be the largest data center player in India both in terms of capacities and service levels.

Has the global slowdown affected you in any way?
Not really. The demand is still there for quality data center space. As a matter of fact, we have strong indications of an increasing trend in data center outsourcing because by hosting in specialized data centers like CtrlS, customers would get the twin benefit of eliminating CAPEX and more importantly management of mission-critical infrastructure by an expert. Data center outsourcing gives them the peace of mind to focus on their core business without having to worry about IT or downtime.

What are the challenges before you?
Sourcing 20 MW power for each of our data centers is a major challenge for us. We are planning to overcome this by setting up captive power plants for our data centers.
