Working under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, BIS is the National Standard Body of India. It was formed for the harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. A MoU has been signed between BIS and IIT Roorkee for collaboration in the areas of standardisation and conformity assessment based on equality and reciprocity. Both the organizations will work in a number of fields including civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical, earthquake engineering, development and management of water resources and renewable energy. Both institutes will participate in standardisation activity through technical committees of the bureau at national and international level, undertake R&D projects related to standardisation and conformity assessment.
