Amazon to invest up to $4 billion in ChatGPT developer’s rival, Anthropic
Amazon will be investing up to $4 billion in artificial intelligence firm Anthropic and take a minority ownership position in the company. The move underscores Amazon’s aggressive AI push as it looks to keep pace with rivals such as Microsoft and Alphabet’s Google. Anthropic was founded two years ago by former OpenAI research executives and recently debuted its new AI chatbot called Claude 2.
Amazon is already a major player in AI, with its cloud computing platform Amazon Web Services (AWS) being a popular choice for AI training and deployment. Amazon is also using AI in its own businesses, such as in its product recommendation system and its delivery logistics. Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) executives, and recently debuted its new AI chatbot named Claude 2.
The investment in Anthropic gives Amazon access to Anthropic's cutting-edge AI technology. This could help Amazon to improve its existing AI products and services, and to develop new ones. For example, Amazon could use Anthropic's AI to develop more personalized product recommendations, or to create more efficient delivery routes.
The investment in Anthropic is also a signal to Amazon's competitors that it is serious about AI. Microsoft and Google have both invested heavily in AI, and they are developing their own AI technologies. Amazon's investment in Anthropic shows that it is committed to staying ahead of the curve in AI.
This move highlights how the big tech titan is stepping up its rivalry with other giants Microsoft, Google and Nvidia in the AI space. The AI Race is on, with the big tech firms racing to lead in the development, deployment, and utilisation of artificial intelligence technologies.
