Airports Authority of India (AAI) working under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, manages a total of 125 Airports, which include 11 International Airports, 08 Customs Airports, 81 Domestic Airports and 25 Civil Enclaves at Defence Airfields. It is responsible for creating, upgrading, maintaining and managing the civil aviation infrastructure in India.
AAI has successfully implemented the Automatic Dependence Surveillance System (ADSS), using indigenous technology, at Calcutta and Chennai Air Traffic Control Centres. This gave India the distinction of being the first country to use this advanced technology in the South East Asian region.
AAI has implemented the GAGAN project in technological collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where the satellite based system will be used for navigation. AAI has also connected 22 airports under its regional connectivity (UDAN) scheme in the first phase. The scheme is aimed at making flying affordable for the masses.
