A significant data breach exposes the personal information of almost 7.5 million boAt users
More than 7.5 million consumers of boAt, a well-known manufacturer of smartwatches and audio products, had their personal information hacked in a recent cyberattack and made its way into the dark web.
Sensitive information such as names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and customer IDs are among the exposed data. The impacted clients are at serious danger from this, as they could become victims of identity theft, phishing scams, and financial fraud.
A hacker with the name ShopifyGUY reportedly claimed responsibility for the breach on April 5. The hacker dumped files of data breach with access to PII information of customers, which has 75,50,000 entries.
These data breaches will have a serious impact and people become more exposed towards financial fraud, phishing scams and identity theft. Threat actors can leverage the personal details of individuals to launch sophisticated social engineering attacks, as per a cyber expert.
The leaker's profile (ShopifyGUY) is relatively new and only has this leak under his belt. As the data is genuine, the hacker will gain a good reputation among the forum community, which will increase their future data sales, explains Rakesh Krishnan, Senior Threat Analyst at NetEnrich. “Considering the timeline, we can assume that the hackers gained access to the boAt customer database at least one month ago and put the data on the forum yesterday.”
